TI Licenses InterTrust's Rights/PD(TM) Software to Develop Flexible, Secure
Solutions for Portable Internet Audio Devices

DALLAS and SANTA CLARA, Cailf., May 19 /PRNewswire/ -- In an effort to
accelerate the growth of the Internet audio market, Texas Instruments
Incorporated (TI) (NYSE: TXN), the world leader in DSP and analog
technologies, and InterTrust Technologies Corporation (Nasdaq: ITRU), the
MetaTrust Utility(TM), today announced an agreement to develop secure
solutions for portable audio devices. This solution will allow digital
content to be securely transferred from a consumer's PC to a portable Internet
audio device and used only as permitted by the rightful owner of the content.
(See ti.com.
Using technology from InterTrust, TI will develop enhanced Digital Rights
Management (DRM) capabilities based on TI's programmable, low-power
TMS320C5000(TM) digital signal processors (DSPs) that offer original equipment
manufacturers (OEMs) flexible solutions for the secure download and playback
of rights protected music content. The solution will be available by third
quarter 2000.
Combining TI's DSP technology with InterTrust's DRM platform offers one of
the most secure solutions for the transmission of digital content. The
TI/InterTrust solution, which will be MetaTrust-Certified(TM), will support
InterTrust's Rights/PD(TM) software and will incorporate advanced security
features, such as a built-in, unique Secure Digital Music Initiative (SDMI)
ID, verification of a secure environment and disabling of debug and test
interfaces.
The TI/InterTrust relationship also enables the persistent protection of
all-digital content and supports simple to complex business models defined by
the individual content owner or device manufacturer. The TI/InterTrust
solution is software-upgradeable to enable support for future product features
and multiple audio formats. TI's programmable DSPs support all existing audio
formats including MP3, Windows Media Audio, Advanced Audio Coding (AAC),
RealNetworks RealAudio G2, Liquid Audio and the speech codec used by Audible,
Inc.
TI DSP technology, coupled with InterTrust's leading DRM technology,
offers OEMs the most flexible security solution available, so they can
incorporate any level of security they choose. TI's DSPs are currently
designed into more than 30 of the next-generation portable audio players,
including the RCA Lyra, Sony(TM) Vaio(R) Music Clip and Sanyo's new portable
player.
"TI's programmable DSP provides a flexible platform for InterTrust's
general purpose DRM platform that is cost efficient and adaptable to meet the
needs of portable device manufacturers," said Edmund Fish, EVP and chief
business officer, InterTrust Technologies Corporation. "This technology
partnership will allow future electronic devices to deliver SDMI-compliant,
secure digital content for the Internet and other media outlets. TI is at the
forefront of the Internet audio market and has done an outstanding job of
meeting the strict demands of end-users, hardware manufacturers and the music
industry."
"At TI, we pride ourselves in knowing what manufacturers want in the form
of security, and we have always offered them the most flexible solutions to
accommodate their needs," said Bob McKune, worldwide marketing manager for
TI's Internet audio business. "TI programmable DSPs are ideally suited for
InterTrust's DRM platform and provide our customers with a broad range of
features, including one of the most advanced DRM systems with flexible upgrade
capabilities to incorporate future features and codecs."
"BMG is pleased to see the leading developer of distributed DRM technology
teaming up with the world's leading designer and supplier of DSP and analog
technologies to enable future portable devices to fully satisfy and exceed the
SDMI requirements for digital music downloads," said Christa Hausler, senior
director of New Technology, BMG Entertainment. "We believe this partnership
will usher in a new era of rights-managed music and create a new avenue by
which we distribute our content to our customers."
