I believe in global specialization, and it is true that we have been trading with China for some time. Human rights groups are against it because it would mean giving up some leverage against abuses by the regime. The unions and some others make the argument that there is too much use of work camps (essentially slave labor) and too much piracy of intellectual property (mainly through bootlegging), and that until we negotiate a fairer trade regimen, there should be no regularization of trade. Pro- China forces argue that greater affluence brings political liberalization,in the long run, and that since China is our main antagonist in the Pacific Rim, we ought to keep open diplomatic channels through closer trade relations, rather than risk a regional Cold War. With allegations of influence peddling and security compromises, this is a lousy time to address the issues for resolution.........
