why invest MS money against an eventual OfficeCo - which will be able to take the gloves off against Corel.

Actually, I would believe that WordPerfect would either die or be sold off. However, CorelDraw is one the premiere graphics packages out there as well as many of the other niche applications that CORL has acquired.

But what I was really focusing on is that MSFT has very little experience porting their applications to anything other than Windows, whereas CORL has experience porting to both Windows and Linux. Having an investment in CORL would be a low cost means of gaining access to that implentation of Debian emulation for Windows apps. Certainly less costly than developing it all by themselves.

I would just think the MSFT would like both the insurance policy, as well as the favorable publicity that would result from such an investment.

But please, continue to poke holes in my logic. I really don't mind as it is merely a speculation on my part. I still favor the possibility that IBM will buy them out in order to compete against StarOffice and providing a turn-key desktop suite.

Btw, does anyone have any specifications as to what degree Linux is slowed down by running Debian emulation for Windows apps? Considering that CPU speed continues to grow exponentially, it may be a small consideration.

Regards,

Ron
