In the early 1800s a silk weaver named Jacquard developed a loom, improving on the previous design of one Msr Vaucanson, which used something like wooden IBM cards to program the pattern of the weave. This loom could create intricate patterns, such as paisley. Other weavers saw this automation as a threat, and gave it the Luddite treatment. The Jaquard loom is often mentioned in histories of the development of the computer.
