e-bill, Since he is presenting real customers and numbers, what does that say about taking the word of small players like SCMR who can't even get into many of those guys due to their size (many of those customers are looking for support, service and manpower commitments that SCMR or CIEN could not provide). tp

Comments to e-Bill:

1. Only NT and Fujitsu were shipping 10G TDM transmission products in 1999, so Dell'oro is quite correct that NT had 95% of the OC-192 market. As I am sure you know, LU started shipping 10G transmission gear in the March quarter and is ramping production.

2. SCMR does not make traditional SONET/SDH gear, they are selling a mesh-based architecture. Given that their existing customers are Williams and Enron, and their target market is new fiber backbone operators, it is obvious that they compete more with NT, which is the incumbent in nearly every account SCMR calls on.

3. CIEN does not make SONET/SDH gear - they are DWDM specialists. Given that LU iced them out of the AT&T account and is competing for the next generation awards at Sprint and MCI, Ciena's biggest customers you have to wonder about their perspective.

4. I am basing my positive view of LU's optical business on conversations with actual customers, sales personel and vendor engineers. On what do you base your negative view of LU?
