Doc,
Well, I"m a mom, and I don't question Elisabeth's love for her son, but I do question her judgment. The point of Gina's post is that we don't know what the mother's wishes would be for Elian after her death. ANd we also know from Elizabeth's friends in Cuba that she was "desperately in love" with El Loco and wanted to be with him. Of course this doesn't have the same tearjerking, heartrending effect as the "she gave her life so that he might be free" interpretation that the Keep Elian group prefers.

Yes, I am a mother. And no, we don't KNOW what Elian's mother felt or more to the point, whether she would want Elian to stay in the US or go back to his father. I'm sure she loved him very much, especially since she'd had several miscarriages, but I don't buy the "she sacrificed her life to take Elian to freedom" stuff, as I haven't read anything that would confirm that that was her motivation. She could just as well have gone because her boyfriend and most of his family were going and she didn't want to be left alone. Not a noble reason but very human, just as human as Juan Miguel wanting his son back.
