Globalstar launches Morocco's satellite phone service

RABAT, May 19 (Reuters) - France's Teasam consortium started on Friday operating satellite telephone service by Globalstar Telecommunications (NASDAQ:GSTRF) in Morocco, a manager said.

"We have the pleasure to announce to the public the opening of Globalstar services today .... Subscribers to GSM mobile phone with roaming option can benefit from a full coverage by satellite over Morocco's territory," the manager told Reuters.

Morocco granted TESAM, jointly owned by France Telecom (SBF:FTE) and Alcatel (SBF:CGEP), a licence to extend its services to remote areas.

Globalstar is a consortium of telecoms providers and equipment manufacturers that offers telephone services via 48 low orbit satellites.

Loral Space & Communications (NYSE:LOR) has a 40 percent stake and the consortium also includes Qualcomm Inc. (NASDAQ:QCOM), Alenia (MILAN:SIFI), Daimler Chrysler Aerospace , Hyundai and Vodaphone AirTouch (ISEL:VOD).

TESAM operates in 30 countries and the company plans to extend its services to neighbouring North African countries of Algeria and Tunisia.
