Gary, I don't understand your use of the terms "data appliance" and "filer". But to attempt an answer:

The storage of movies is a relative minor problem. Yes, it would require lots of storage, which could even be optical or CD-ROM in juke boxes.

The real problem is the bandwidth requirements which would best be served using some form of caching to that a cache device could retrieve the movie from central storage then forward it to the user when requested. Thus the more popular movies would be cached closer to the requester and the less popular movies would not take up cache space and remain only on their central storage device until requested.

I am not sure that Filers have a role here, however.
