<<Once you have NDS on a target platform (e.g. NT), can you then load the other pieces on that platform (the article says secuirty, caching, and policy management) without buying NetWare?>>

Basically if the application is dependant on Directory-services in offering it's service/function within a framework, it can be installed on any OS you wish (or have). What would be interesting to see evolve would be for applications that run on any system but interoperate at the DS level.

In this sense, the "platform" becomes the Directory service and not the installed OS.

Will ASP be crossplatform?

Well I can't speak for Novell but only for my impressions which were that all of Novell's infrastructure for ecommerce solutions shown at Brainshare are built upon eDirectory. eDirectory is Novell's cross platform directory. My understanding was that both LDAP and NDS are a part of the Novell net services package at the eDirectory level.

Someone from Novell will have to clarify.

Gilles...

>>Even when third parties get involved, Novell has trouble talking about solutions. This is something they will have to do more of to strengthen their image. The recent Copenhagen press release was a great start. Every week we should get a press release about How Novell, its partners and customers are solving an eBusiness problem. This will be much more valuable than the product and technology announcements, the NetWare Connecitons magazine for CNEs, and the product/technology Novell.com features (today's exciting headline is something called "NMAS," God help them)on which Novell squanders its marketing resources.>>

Let's get right to the heart of the current issue.

This forum is a better example for the future than all of the stuff that's wrapped up and hogged tied inside Novell right now.

Some refer to these new spaces as Vortals - as opposed to portals. SI is a stripped-bare bones no-nonsense pioneering version that should give us all a glimpse of the future.

What?

Yes, for this IS the "transformation" that I've been speaking about.

When INDIVIDUALS, companies, customers, participants, partners, players, shareholders, family, friends, neighbors, associates, babysitter, brothers, sisters - INDIVIDUALS, INDIVIDUALS - claim the KISS mantle of this New Age by embracing moral, ethical foundational requirements for open, transparent, communication about anything, anywhere, anytime which is important to A community or gathering of INDIVIDUALS.

STOP!

Companies are history!

Communities are the future!

INDIVIDUALS represent the FINAL, LAST frontier.

The only thing keeping more people from recognizing the incredible transformational power of this shift is that there are just too few people who have the passion, guts and balls to share their thoughts, energies, ideas, passion, information, knowledge with others in a very open, risk-oriented way.

Coming on to a forum like this is akin to jumping in this New River of Life. It's a learning experience, fraught with potential for pain, ill-will, misunderstanding, judgment, etc.

Get used to it, folks. This forum will eventually morph and expand to new areas which will provide more integrated
tools and services which will greatly expand this experience and enable more interaction, sharing and serving. I firmly believe that Novell is in a great spot to overlay, interact, support and channel with the growth, development and integration of these "services."

For the world will be fast moving away from companies. Companies can't move fast enough anymore. For the closed, power/control mindset of competition will only allow for very strained versions of cooperation and partnerships. There's just too much friction and the end result is a stalemate which fractures trust and bleeds away energy.

The real McCoy is simply in the interaction of INDIVIDUALS. How does this interaction take place? Well, it's still very fragmented right now for we are still in the very early stages of this transformative revolution. But I'll try to give you some guideposts:

- Companies that recognize the interactive power of this new medium - ie. simply in the form of individuals getting together and sharing their ideas which in many cases can really challenge the status quo of the companies agenda - will embrace individuals from these communities for help.

- It's still to be determined whether these FREE individuals who "help" will continue to communicate openly with these forums or whether they simply are gathering the will and resources to move the company "higher" by encouraging them to take risks to allow for more freedom of expression between and among individuals who may be employees from many companies as well as freelancers and entrepreneurs.

- Leadership for the heart and soul of the communities which these companies are a part of will be embroiled in a state of constant flux from here on out as investors, developers, partners, employees, consultants learn the value of "going virtual" as more and more members of these emerging communities form, associate, overlap, integrate, break-up, merge and evolve.

- The main currency which drives these New Service Age communities will be TRUST. People will be encouraged to collaborate, cooperate, connect and communicate based on the actions, words, works and record of others inside and outside these communities.

- Another key driver which frequently will transcend TRUST - perhaps as a latency of the Old Squeaky Wheel effect - will be ENERGY and PASSION. It will take some time for people so sort out positive vs. negative energy/passion. It will take even longer for people to get out of of the ultimate zero-sum energy-taking hang-up concerning the power we all have to judge/consider/weigh right vs. wrong.

- Ultimately RESULTS - and a growing number of success stories - will prime the pump of these virtual communities as they become the core platforms for the allocation, dissemination and balance of TRUST, TIME, ENERGY, RESOURCES, SKILLS etc.

Bottom line:

- The power and control of companies has been checkmated.

- It's only a matter of time - perhaps much shorter than any of us realize - before a growing number of THE most influential individuals accept this stunning reality and really take steps to CLAIM this energy while creating, extending and spreading more of this new currency worldwide: TRUST.

- The leaders of this New Age of Service will be INDIVIDUALS who will become known for the leading, innovative thoughts, ideas and energies they have shared openly in forums such as this. The influence these New Leaders will not come from the Old power/control paradigm, but this very humble, open, risk-oriented SERVICE paradigm. Despite all the wackiness and craziness, these people will still be judged on a couple common dimensions: 1) can I trust him/her?; 2) is he/she creating, building energy, expanding the pie?

And before all this is over I will have to finally read Atlas Schrugged for it sounds like Ayn Rand was onto something which predicted this wild phase we are going to go through as we all try to sort this out in relation to the sovereignty of the individual.

In the meantime, I see more and more of the really good, talented people jumping ship and declaring their freedom as they embrace the power of this New Age of Service and risk entering into the open, risk and results-oriented domain of these emerging communities.

The individuals who don't jump and continue clutching to security of the corporate class will end up being corrupted more and more. It will require a rapidly escalating infusion of resources in these dying currencies - ie. money and benefits - to get the same output from a declining talent pool that sticks around.

The Union movement will "go" upscale - ie. white collar - in this next turbulent phase.

This is all just conjecture on my part. I am sharing it as both advice and warning from a glass that I see as half full. For there is so much good that will come during this shift toward a growing recognition of the principals and values that drive and support this SERVICE Age.

Sorry for the long wind.

Peace.

GO!!
