I keep re-thinking this 2% proposal, but I also keep seeing people in the course of my work who are crying that they just lost half of their retirement money in the NASDAQ crash. Warren Buffett (whose opinions are entitled to some respect, no?) thinks stocks may not be very exciting for the next 10 years--no return at all is possible in a deep bear market. I don't think this a question of "freedom"--I want to be free of the colossal taxes it would take to bail people out for poor investment decisions, or a prolonged bear market that doesn't provide a sufficient return. I know SS is a mess, but how can we be sure we just wouldn't just create a bigger mess?
