I do a regular shut down then hardware reset once a day on all 4 systems in the morning. They run jobs all day and night. For trading and software development use Pentium Pro 200 and P233-MMX with 256MB RAM and 3 NEC 21" monitors on each system. OS is Windows98-SE on all 4 boxes. The MMX box runs ZoneAlarm firewall for security. Modem sharing software (AllAboard) is used to get to the internet from the 3 other machines (2 more P233 with 128MB RAM, single 17" monitor, one used by daughter and one used with Amateur Radio and Radio Telescope equipment) on the internal network via the MMX box. Because of the NAT (network address translation) done by the modem sharing software on the MMX box, the other PCs use intranet IP addressess not available to the internet, so they are 100% secure. AboutTime runs on the MMX box to synchronize the system clock to a NIST time server on the internet once per hour. The other PCs get their time from the MMX box also once per hour. Antivirus from Norton on all boxes. Disk maintenance (lost files and cluster repair, defrag) by Norton runs daily after midnight on all boxes. The network is thin ethernet using TCP/IP and NETBEUI. The MMX box runs Stockwatch TSE, CDNX realtime tickers with alarms set, scans, charts, MD etc., MS-C++ or MS-VB, MS-Excel2000 to track trades (part of MS-Office2000), MS-Outlook (with scheduler, reminders and task list active). The Pro runs NAS ticker etc., monitored threads, news sites, trading accounts, MS-C++ or MS-VB. Tradestation runs end of day data scans on both systems as overnight jobs. I always have an audio CD running on the MMX box while using it. There are 11 task icons on the tray of each of these 2 systems. All 4 boxes run the SETI@home project in the background while being used for their primary functions. setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu All software loaded is latest version and Windows98 compatible. Have never had a memory problem on any box.
