Other intriguing questions will be who gets "blamed" for this market meltdown and who goes to jail? The junk bond deals of the 80's led to several notorius convictions. I suspect there will be ample political motivation for the feds to crackdown on the charlatans who commissioned many of the phony IPOs of the past 2 years. But then again, Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs are also big campaign contributors so I believe the fish to be fried will be the smaller brokerages.

When its all said in done the folks laughing to the bank will be the trial lawyers. Can you imagine a class action suit against Morgan Stanley for hyping oh so many worthless internet stocks? Mary Meeker will be such an entertaining witness. The lawyer asks, "Now Ms. Meeker, in Summer 1999 you touted EToys stock to be worth how much? The stock now trades 90% lower. So how much did Morgan Stanley profit from inflating EToys stock? until it crashed?"
