Go to the main finance page in Yahoo, then click on Major US Indices under US Markets and it will list the symbols for most of the indices. Note: Not everyone uses the same symbols for the various indices.

OT--When you set up portfolios in Yahoo, they prompt you if you want to put in an index, and show several. ^ixic is the nazdaq. (I basically learned this by wandering around from time to time. Not very systematic on my part).
