The article is correct. The Cisco strategy is flawed. Cisco should have been working in house on development of a large core router. Their lack of R&D opened the door for Juniper to take market share. Cisco should have acquired an optical company like Ciena about two years ago. At present, Cisco looks like a contained gorilla - a gorilla in the enterprise space who is unable to become a gorilla in the carrier space. Nortel made the right decision in acquiring Qtera, Xros and Core-Tek to protect its dominance in long haul and metro. Nortel must be the first to improve OPTera so that the optical layer become aware of what is happening at the switching routing layer. The other companies are worried about Nortel developing this technology first.
