Yes, Manx, you're missing something because Yahoo has the PE figured wrong. The 1999 SanDisk annual report shows earnings of $.43 for the year. Divide that into the price and you don't come up with 19 - right? I figured it to be about 133 on a price of 57 1/2. Take a look at the RESEARCH on Yahoo about SanDisk. You'll see that it's in the Computer Storage Devices industry, and when you look at other stocks in that industry (click on the industry name and a whole list comes up), you'll see these stocks among those listed (and their PE's by clicking on the stock symbol): SSTI - 215, DRXR - 23, EMC - 119, NTAP - 405, ECCS - 103. As you can see, PE's are all over the map with these companies.

Manx, Yahoo's earnings and thus calculation of PE includes a large one time gain resulting from SNDK selling stock in UMC it owned. A rough expectation of this year's earning is between $.90 and $1.00 (we already have $.43 of this "under the belt") and next year between $1.40 and $1.50.
