carranza and Disu?..Train Trip to Creel I notified the tour guide as soon as I arrived on the tour that I had a donation for The Tarahumara Children?s Hospital in Creel founded by Father Luis Verplancken. The tour guide assured me I would get a chance to contact the hospital when we arrived. This tour guide love the children and speaks of Father Verplancken on his tour but had never had the chance to meet him. We were in doubts as to my chances of meeting the Father as we would be there for one day and that was on a Sunday. The train master Mike takes US stamps/mail back and forth for this hospital saving them postage and lost time as the Mexican mail is so slow. Mike called the hospital and setup a meeting with me, the tour guide and himself. Father Verplancken came in and gave us a tour of the hospital??there were approximately 13 babies?.some with TB, some with malnutrition. One was the smallest I had ever seen living in an incubator. The hospital was as clean as any we have here in the states?..and being the only sanitary spot in that area. Father Verplancken has begun to drill wells for some of the people in the area. It is so dry in that area that if they do not get the monsoon rains in July they are in big trouble. I visited the communal living of the Tarahumaras, the church, the cave dwellings?etc. I must say this was the day that I enjoyed the most. Creel now has it?s first paved road into the area?.. I will not even begin to tell you of the poverty in the area?..as you guys have to be familiar with the situation. The thing that I had to keep repeating to myself is that they do not know the difference. They are not aware of what is out side of their area. They were very shy, kind people. Would I make this trip again??hopefully not. The train was a 1330 miles of rocking and jerking??(what a shame that something like that bothers us. We are so spoiled.) The problem is that I do know a difference. In closing this day of my trip I will say that this is one of the best causes I have ever seen. There are no administrative salaries in this all volunteer corporation. All proceeds go the Tarahumara Mission helping Father Verplancken do his great work for the Children and adults of the Tarahumara Indians. Malnutrition, tuberculosis, typhoid and a number of proverty related parasites and diseases, although reduced, still face the villager?s daily. I personally saw a lot of kids walking around with TB and scars from frost bite on their little hands and face. Any donations are tax deductible. I Received a thank you letter and a video in the mail today. Love, dealer
