It's not really relevant to define everything that is the least bit unique as a monopoly, equivalent to position that Microsoft enjoys in PC software. I notice you have to look at small niches to find any examples where Microsoft has competition. I'll throw you one where Microsoft is clearly behind, personal finance Money vs Quicken. But again, the exception proves the rule, It was only through government action that Microsoft didn't buy them out and dominate that sector too. About 5 years ago I used competing spreadsheets (Quatro Pro) and database (Paradox) but it became increasing clear that "Innovations" in the operating system, which were more like random undocumented interface changes, would doom those programs from ever running reliably. I don't think many people appreaciate the harm to consumers because of programs that were never written or marketed because there are few avenues to make a profit.
