I believe the reasoning, to use the term loosely, goes something like this:

Socialism is the root of all evil.
Hatred of immigrants is evil.
Therefore, socialism is the root of the hatred of immigrants.

Of course one might argue that since evil antedates socialism, socialism is unlikely to be the root of all evil, but that would be stepping outside the box, and we can't have that.
