LSI Logic Announces Licensing of Alcatel's DMT Technology for Use in ADSL Designs

Agreement Grants LSI Logic Access to Alcatel Technology for Development of ADSL Broadband Internet Applications

MILPITAS, Calif., May 22 /PRNewswire/ -- LSI Logic Corporation (NYSE: LSI - news) today announced that it has licensed key discrete multitone (DMT) technology from Alcatel for integration in Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) system-on-a-chip (SoC) designs. This licensing agreement allows LSI Logic to provide the industry's most widely deployed DSL solution to its customers and offer compatibility with the overwhelming majority of central office equipment.

The worldwide market for DSL modem devices is experiencing phenomenal growth -- from US$272 million in 1998 to a projected US$8.8 billion by 2002, according to Cahners In-Stat Group. This growth is driven by the demand for the ``instant'' Internet access provided by ADSL connections, and the ability of major ADSL players to produce competitive solutions, afforded by highly integrated silicon solutions. Since Alcatel's DMT technology is optimized for full rate DSL with data rates of up to 8 megabits per second, users of LSI Logic's integrated solution will be able to access the Internet at data rates up to 200 times faster than a standard analogue connection.

``The Alcatel DMT engine is the standard by which all others are judged,'' said Giuseppe Staffaroni, vice president and general manager of LSI Logic's Broadband Communications Division. ``Its hybrid hardware/software approach guarantees the lowest power consumption, has an efficient silicon implementation, and requires less memory than DSP-based solutions while still retaining the flexibility required to ensure compatibility with emerging standards.''

``I am happy to welcome LSI Logic as a valuable licensing partner in our strategic licensing program,'' said Martin De Prycker, president of Alcatel's carrier data activities. He continues, ``This license agreement will further enable the exploding ADSL market.''

``The ADSL DMT engine is a key system building block for LSI Logic,'' Staffaroni added. ``We can now supply all of the intellectual property (IP) cores our customers need to design ADSL SoC devices in the shortest possible time, and with low risk -- especially with respect to global interoperability. Along with our ZSP(TM) DSP and MPEG2 video technology, LSI Logic is well positioned to enable the second-generation of audio and video-enabled devices.''

LSI Logic's ADSL SoC offering will include other IP cores such as: Asynchronous Transfer Mode Segmentation and Re-assembly (ATM-SAR), Ethernet Media Access Controller (MAC), Ethernet and ATM Physical Layer Devices (PHYs), Peripheral Component Interface (PCI) and Universal Serial Bus (USB). In addition, LSI Logic will offer its customers its full portfolio of ARM microcontroller and ZSP(TM) DSP cores accompanied with protocol and voice software using the company's high-performance G12, 0.18-micron process.

LSI Logic projects that the ADSL DMT IP will be ready to incorporate into customer SoC designs by Q3, 2000.

LSI made the first chips for ADSL for Amati. They are back again with Alcatel.

All the best,
