A personal rebuttal to the Pac Bell ads. My home town, Calgary, a population of approximately 900,000, is Canada's most wired city. Stats Canada released a report yesterday saying that 60.1% of all Calgarians are regular internet users in the home. That's approximately 540,000 regular internet users. In January of 2000, 50% of all home internet access in Calgary was through @HOME. That is approximately 270,000 regular daily home internet users. (note: this does not mean there are 270,000 subscribers as most homes will have multiple users). The quick facts. -30% of all people in Calgary use @HOME -50% of all internet households are connected via @HOME -Shaw Cable is still swamped with installs. -270,000 Calgarians online daily, on the same cable lines. My point: If there is a case study to be made for what happens when Cable saturates the market, Calgary is it. There have been no Calgary @Home users groups complaining about poor service and slow downs. There have been no local media reports (that I'm aware of) detailing any slow service problems. People in Calgary are still waiting to get signed up. These numbers are amazing, and so are the lack of compliants. The shared line issue doesn't have to be one, if you have your access through a competent cable company. Regards Jay On a side note, the bi-variate analysis showed a correlation between internet use and income. 43% of those connected in Calgary had incomes of $81,000 or more.
