The stock market isn't a crap shoot if you think and act long term. You either believe in the macroeconomic growth of capitalism or you don't. If the stock market is considered a crap shoot, then so is everything else, including a government run social security system.

I can think of nothing which has zero financial risk.

The real risk is in staying on our present course. Where it's obvious a train wreck is going to happen in the next 30 years, when 70 million boomers are retired. Boomers will no doubt demand more benefits, not the same or less, and the burden will get even greater on the young.

No one ever just flat loses in this society. Seniors who would lose their retirement savings through unwise investment decisions would be bailed out. You know it, and I know it.
