haquihana, you may be right regarding the very wealthy skewing the statistics. However, even if you consider them to be equal (per-capita) when compared to a younger generation. The transfer of life energy is not equal.

Last time I looked the AARP had the largest membership of any organization in the country. If what you say is true, and they don't reflect the views of most elderly people. No other lobby group can compete with them.

Their influence on government policy should not be underestimated. And without even looking, I'll bet they're against privatizing social security. Even a measly 2%.
