There used to be a place in Berkeley in the early 80's where you could listen to anything before you bought it. Even though they were a little more expensive I always went there because it was worth it KNOWING what I was buying. I HATE buying things I haven't heard. Talk about a pig in a poke. Thank heavens for real player. I wouldn't have heard of Ry Cooder if I hadn't been thoroughly captivated by the Buena Vista Social Club- and I saw that mainly because I am a huge Wim Wenders fan- Wings of Desire is my favorite movie ever (and I've seen thousands and thousands of movies- so I don't make a choice of favorites lightly). I think you said you might see Cabaret Balkan. I wasn't sure if I made myself clear on how VERY VERY dark it is. I think it may have had some of the same actors from Underground (which is a FABULOUS movie, btw, and not nearly so dark). Cabaret Balkan was a real downer- and I didn't want you to waste precious time viewing it without knowing that. The preview clips for it that I had seen did NOT communicate the despair in this movie.
