And I agree, if the system were completely privatized. Protections (for the idiots) would be necessary.

What I envision is a gradual shift to privatization. Start with 2%, see how it goes for a few years. Do some serious modeling of behavior, then go up from there with protective mechanism in place.

Education during this transition is the key. The President using the bully-pulpit could do a lot to help get the education ball rolling. That's what leadership is all about. Having a vision, and engendering followship through dialogue built on trust.

We could never get that kind of leadership from Al Gore. He's too divisive and untrustworthy to get any meaningful change going.

but I think the notion that we could privatize the whole system without idiot-proofing it (sorry for being so non-PC) would be foolhardy. And we may be moving in that direction.
