Ocli'S Abbe Named Ceo At Jds Management Shakeup At High-Tech Giant Source: The Press Democrat Santa Rosa, CA Publication date: 2000-05-19 Charles "Jay" Abbe, who revamped Optical Coating Laboratory Inc. and then sold the Santa Rosa company to JDS Uniphase Corp., was promoted Thursday to the No. 2 spot at JDS Uniphase following the unexpected resignation of its top executive. Abbe will assume responsibility for day-to-day management of JDS Uniphase as president and chief operating officer of the optical networking giant. The new job was created by the departure of JDS Uniphase chief executive and co-chairman Kevin Kalkhoven, who said he was retiring. Jozef Straus, the company's president and COO, was bumped up to chief executive, opening the door for Abbe's promotion. Abbe will remain in Santa Rosa and fly to Canada, where Straus lives, or telecommute to meetings. Under Kalkhoven, JDS Uniphase maintained dual headquarters in San Jose and Nepean, Ontario. "We have been practicing this decentralized management model for some time, over the last three to four months, and we're able to make it work," Abbe said. The company, formed by the July 1999 merger of JDS Fitel Inc. in Canada and Uniphase Corp. in San Jose, is one of the world's largest suppliers of components that increase the capacity and speed of fiber optics networks. The fast-growing company, which has 13,000 employees around the world, is on track to almost double its sales this year. "It is extremely exciting. The growth scenario is so powerful," Abbe said. "I am going to focus on delivering our quarterly results, operationally, and continue to put in place the growth and capacity and management capability we need to satisfy the doubling of our business." Kalkhoven's retirement is his own choice, Abbe said. It does not signal any problems with JDS Uniphase's plan to acquire E-Tek Dynamics Inc., a deal now under review by antitrust regulators, he said. Kalkhoven will remain with the company as an advisor on strategic matters through the end of fiscal 2001. Abbe, who joined OCLI in 1996 and was promoted to chief executive in 1998, accelerated the company's transformation into the world's largest supplier of optical filters for fiber-optic networks. The filters are a crucial component in wavelength division multiplexing systems made by JDS Uniphase. Last November, JDS Uniphase and OCLI agreed to merge in a deal valued at $6.2 billion by its completion in February. In March, Abbe was named senior operating officer of JDS Uniphase and charged with managing its three global business units. With Abbe's departure as chief executive of OCLI, the Santa Rosa company will be run by president and chief operating officer Joseph Zils. OCLI, combined with subsidiary Flex Products, is the third- largest manufacturing company in Sonoma County with 1,520 employees. OCLI reported $347 million in sales last year.
