None of this had the least to do with undocumented calls in the OS.
The reason that these programs could not adapt to changing tastes quickly was that the developers could not get timely access to the ever changing interface in Windows. The early Microsoft were just as clunky. Do you think that all the other companie's programmers were stupid and they're marketing groups couldn't figure out what people were buying? No, they had to sit around for 6 months reverse engineering the interfaces while Microsoft was selling the next generation of applications. That is the behavior that should be stopped.
