Hi JC - It look's as though those Ultra III's will be delayed due to "over performance" issues forcing Sun to redesign the boards to accommodate the faster speeds.

From a recent interview of our CEO:

"...Sun is preparing for the roll-out of its UltraSparc III-based machines, which will be capable of 8-way clustering with 1,000 processors, McNealy said. Sun partners expect workstations to ship in July.

UltraSparc III has taped out and is yielding higher speeds than Sun anticipated -- 900MHz to in one case over 1GHz --forcing Sun to redesign the boards to accommodate the speeds, McNealy said. Sun competitors have trumpeted UltraSparc III's delay, although Zander told Sun partners on Thursday that Sun anticipates being a $15 billion company by the end of its fiscal year on June 30..."

It sounds like clock speed timing problems with some of the interface cards. I wonder how big a problem this poses? Is it just a mater of swapping out some board components or does it requires a major "redesign" of some of the timing circuits? Management seemed to down play the problem.

EKS

JC: <Potato Gun> if this guy needs to model this Potato Gun send him my way (my SUNW stock is tanking, I need some cash). Right now I'm developing a fluid dynamics (CFD) model for simulating transient gas transport through slots manufactured in HDPE piping (3 phase flow in the geology). While I'm at it I might as well put a Potato Gun feature in the program.
