Gary, Nortel issued a press release a few months ago in which they identified certain optical components in which they claimed a proprietary advantage. I do not know whether these components are sold to other optical vendors. Then, there is the issue of Nortel's network management system. The carriers who installed Nortel's SONET and DWDM have also installed Nortel's network management system. This includes most of the large carriers. When QWest buys product from Ciena, they stay with Nortel's network management system. I can see the possiblity of that system becoming the de facto network management system for optical networks. It is too early to know whether Nortel's acquisition of Xros will give them an advantage in switching wavelenths or whether Core-Tek's tunable laser will give them an advantage. I do believe that Nortel presently has a better 10Gbps product than any other vendor. I remember the competition between Lucent and NOrtel when Level 3 announced the Nortel product was superior in every way. Some of that superiority is due to superior components. I will try to locate the press release about their components.
