You are certainly right, the hiring strategy can affect the ratio of profits to employees. I was thinking however of the lag when a technology or (in the case of MCD and WMT) a business practice is developing and the profits aren't pouring in yet compared to the time when the technology is perfected to a good degree and starts to bring in the big bucks without a large increase in the number of employees. I don't want to tout any particular stocks, but a few on the list have had dramatic increases in this ratio for the latter reason. All this is aimed at finding criteria for comparing gorillas.
