Thomas Mercer-Hursh: Numbers are useful. Over the years, I have found that what matters is quality, and finding proxies for quality is difficult. When push comes to shove, some understanding of the field or setting in which an individual company is operating is essential. And to achieve that understanding takes more than number manipulation, no matter how creative.

Also what matters is potential and future performance. Numbers almost by definition are seen in the rear view mirror. If the windshield is where we need to look, then quantitative analysis while of use is not sufficient.

Proxies for quality are such things as the vision of the management, the command of the technology (the lock), and the ability to see where demand will be and for what.

Not easy.

All of this is why I am so comfortable with Qualcomm looking ahead 3 to 5 years.

Best.
