May 22 /PRNewswire/ -- IMPCO Technologies, Inc. announced today that its Advanced Technology Center located in Irvine, California, has been awarded a contract by California's South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) to develop and demonstrate an advanced, high capacity, high performance gaseous fuel storage tank for natural gas internal combustion vehicles and fuel cell vehicles. The total project cost is valued at $1.42 million with SCAQMD and IMPCO, each sharing a portion of the costs.

California's South Coast Air Quality Management District is a progressive and leading regulatory agency committed to advancing those technologies capable of having a major impact in the mitigation of air pollution in the South Coast Air Basin.

Under the terms of the contract, SCAQMD will participate financially with IMPCO in the design, fabrication and testing of an advanced high capacity, high performance natural gas fuel storage tank that will have increased capacity, significantly reduced weight, substantial improvement in safety margins and reduced costs. The project also includes the development of an advanced pilot production tank manufacturing plant, prototype testing and subsequent field-testing in vehicles. A field application at SunLine Transit of Palm Springs is planned as part of this program. SunLine Transit is a leader in CNG and hydrogen powered fuel cell bus fleets. Recently major cities such as Los Angeles and New York have announced the purchase of hundreds of clean emission natural gas fueled transit buses.

Syed Hussain, Vice President and General Manager of IMPCO's Technology and Automotive OEM Division said: "The South Coast Air Quality Management District is regarded nationally as a leading regulatory agency that has worked hard to achieve a positive impact on the reduction of air pollution in California's South Coast Air Basin. To have SCAQMD participate with IMPCO further demonstrates SCAQMD's commitment to enabling technology advancement."
