U S West to Invest $3.4 Billion
More to Upgrade Network

DENVER -- U S West Inc. said it plans to spend an additional $3.4 billion this year to upgrade its telecommunications network and meet certain federal requirements.

Like many telecommunications companies, U S West is investing money in its network so it can offer new services such as high-speed Internet access and video.

Other companies are budgeting even more money than U S West. Bell Atlantic, the New York Baby Bell, said it expected to spend $8.9 billion to $9.2 billion in 2000 in capital expenditures.
