I agree that mandatory fuel efficiency was a no brainer. We blew that one. I agree the Arabs are now less interested in crushing us through embargo than they are in limiting supply and artificially keeping up the price. (No reason to shoot and kill us when they can just suck our blood for years on end. :) I just don't like our being at the mercy of OPEC's supply decisions. We should have put the nation on a different path in the 1970s, to be lower net consumers of oil, and higher consumers of alternative energy sources. It's a highly non-trivial problem to solve, but we had 30 years to solve it and we did virtually nothing.
