What wasn't said by management directly during the cc is that Ciena's new products go more directly into competition with product strategies of the more comprehensive systems providers. These total system buy-ins require much more deliberation by customers because a decision now may well determine their supplier for years to come. NT, Cisco and others are positioning products to compete against tiny Ciena in this arena. Ciena may well have the best products in the field but competitive offerings are in the pipe line. Failure to lock up customers at this juncture is critical - failure to do so may well result in being locked out when larger rivals force their way in. Maybe things are going fine and qualifications are just running their course, but the fear remains that the new product efforts will be like selling a better word processor against Microsquash's Office suite.
