Data General, a Division of EMC, Launches Comprehensive High Availability
Strategy Combining Servers, Software, Services and EMC Storage

WESTBORO, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 22, 2000--

Added Partnerships and Consolidation Solutions Ensure
New Levels of High Availability and Performance; Addressing
Customer's IT Infrastructure Needs

Data General, a Division of EMC Corporation (NYSE:EMC), today introduced a comprehensive high availability strategy,
complementing its growing portfolio of consolidation solutions. Combining Data General's long-standing expertise on high
availability servers with EMC storage, Data General now offers the most complete data availability capability in the industry.
This strategy features partnerships and incremental solutions for delivering new levels of high availability and performance to
meet a spectrum of customer requirements.

"Data General's strategy delivers valuable high availability solutions and provides customers with the options, flexibility and
support necessary to protect their business critical data and applications at all levels," said Bill Moran, research director of
D.H. Brown, Inc. "Data General is ensuring extremely high levels of business uptime."

"With the costs of downtime continuing to rise and cutting deeper into revenues, customers are demanding greater levels of
high availability and performance. In response, we have developed a complete range of solutions for ensuring a flexible,
high availability environment that supports customer business-requirements," said Bob Guilbert, director of software marketing
for Data General, a Division of EMC Corporation.

Delivering on its commitment to high-availability consolidation solutions announced in February with the formation of the
EMC/Microsoft alliance, Data General is combining its rackmount AViiON(R) servers, clustering solutions, and industry-leading
99.9% uptime guarantees to deliver levels of data availability and advanced performance that were previously unattainable.

Data General's high availability strategy identifies key levels in the development of a customer's infrastructure where high
availability and performance are essential. Drawing upon its growing portfolio of high availability, consolidation solutions and
partnerships, Data General is able to offer certified, pre-configured, pre-tested and redundant solutions that ensure a high
availability environment at each level. Data General is also able to offer faster, simpler deployment through leading
assessment planning, implementation and support services and a lower total cost of ownership with its proven management
and clustering software.

The five levels in the development of a customer's infrastructure outlined in Data General's high availability strategy include:

- Level 1: System Protection - A single system configuration of EMC CLARiiON(TM) storage, Data General Win/Alert(TM) and
UPS based around Data General AViiON servers that provides complete system protection and reduces downtime from hours
to minutes at a minimal cost.

- Level 2: Data Protection - A single system configuration with backup capabilities and support for EMC Symmetrix(R) storage
that heightens data protection and single site management.

- Level 3: Site Level Data Protection - A single system configuration with data replication capabilities to support multi-site
management that offers site level data protection and reducing downtime from minutes to mere seconds.

- Level 4:Application Protection - A clustered configuration featuring EMC Symmetrix storage and distance clustering as well
as backup capabilities focused on application protection that ensures multi-site management and minimizes downtime.

- Level 5: Business Protection - A clustered configuration adding EMC Celerra(TM) storage and heightened backup and
clustering functionality that delivers "global" business protection and Data General's industry-leading 99.9% uptime
guarantee.

Guilbert added, "We provide a more complete data availability solution than anyone in the industry. With a strong portfolio of
highly available server and leading storage solutions, as well as partners like Microsoft, Intel, NSI and APC, we continue to
increase the level of uptime and protection offered to our customers in supporting their computing infrastructures and
mission-critical businesses."

Data General's Leadership in High Availability

Data General offers a unique portfolio of high availability solutions that combine traditional strengths in server level high
availability with EMC's industry-leading portfolio of high availability storage solutions. In addition to the solutions announced
today, the company provides leadership in high availability, clustering, systems management, scalability and a
comprehensive professional services offering that is central to Business Continuity. Data General provides a variety of high
availability AViiON server platforms, with features such as "in-a-box" packaging for easy `scaling out', centralized control and
management with DG/ManageSuite(TM) and DG/RackManager(TM), hot swap redundant cooling and power, and
fault-tolerant SCSI and Fibre Channel EMC CLARiiON storage solutions.

Data General has been a pioneer in setting the industry standard for uptime, offering the first 99.9 percent uptime guarantees
for Windows NT, SQL Server 7.0, and Exchange 5.5. As part of the recently announced EMC and Microsoft global alliance,
Data General also became the first to announce a 99.9 percent uptime guarantee for Windows 2000.

Morning Herb, So McData somehow manages to sell more of the high priced directors. Hopefully Qancr will start to erode their biz too. Things are happening out there Herb.
Where is that new ASIC anyway.

Went through all of the Nishan job offerings. They want people who know how to use Gate Arrays. I guess to get something that works quickly. ASIC people, back plane expertise, JAVA expertise for management. If SoIP were building on stuff already done they wouldn't have to make a new switch.
