Scumbria,

OT

Coming from a Soviet Bloc country, I'm surprised that you don't have stronger feelings about an entity of government which views wealth as an evil.

I think it is important to distinguish between wealth and prices. Houses, companies, or more generally assets, shares, goods and services are wealth - and are good.

The prices of these items (or in case of stocks - valuations) are just that - prices. They are subject to overall monetary policy.

I have not given enough thought to the need for the government body (Fed) running the monetary policy. I suppose we could have private money as we had in 19th century or a return to gold standard, but these will be isolated views as long as the Fed is run as well as we have seen for last 20+ years by Paul Volker and Alan Greenspan.
