That's one of the reasons we decided to start our start-up 'spread out'. We looked at the overhead from have 3 offices in 'lower rent' areas (still good areas mind you, just not the valley), and for the same price as 1 office in the valley we can have 3 spread across the continent, offering much better regional service and STILL have money left over... this includes things like 3x the connectivity costs (1 office vs. 3)... it's just insane.

Are you sure? Wait a while. After all, weren't the huge tech stock runups, at least in some part, responsible for the house cost runup in Silicon Valley? Well, the stock prices are going the other way now. Having said that, I have to admit that I did see a house go for $200K over asking just last week. Still, I think I'd wait if I were in the market for a house here.
