``Clearly, investor sentiment is very negative,'' said Erik Gustafson, senior vice president and portfolio manager at Stein Roe & Farnham. ``Everybody is letting cash build up and nobody is buying.''

``The Fed and the Fed 'hawks' seem intent on killing the prosperity,'' Gustafson said, adding that ``if that's the case, this market has got a lot of problems.'' He said the Fed's aggressive moves come despite evidence that inflation is well-behaved.

Joseph Battipaglia, chief investment strategist at Gruntal & Co., said in a research report that he doubted the Fed would try to force the economy into recession just ahead of an election, without considerable evidence of a build-up in inflation. He said that with few signs of inflation, he expects a resumption of the bull market in stocks later this year.
