Shaw sees below expectation Q2 on higher production costs
DALTON, Ga., May 22 (Reuters) - Shaw Industries, Inc. (NYSE:SHX - news), the largest manufacturer of tufted broadloom carpet, on Monday said it expects lower-than-expected second quarter earnings on higher raw material, energy, and interest costs.

Shaw said in a statement that second quarter 2000 earnings will be in the range of 47 to 50 cents per share, versus consensus estimates of 55 cents, and 48 cents posted a year ago, due to gross margins hurt by increases in raw materials and ``other energy-related'' costs. In addition, softer sales in the residential sector also contributed to a weaker April.

The company said, however, that it deflected most of these costs by increasing prices, and that the full impact of the price increase will not be felt until the third quarter, when it expects gross margins to return to a more normal level.
