What I'm suggesting is that even this is arguable. Not out of any loyalty to Del, but just to argue. X made a pretty good point ... who wants love like that? Btm line is there are fifty ways to get around it (placing Del's opinion in the vast shadowlands between flat wrong and compellingly right on), and they hinge for me on the ambiguity of the text.

As for your list of mentions, they are too indirect, too colored by the narrator, to satisfy me. But I recognize that that is mho.
