"some speculation recently about reviving the draft. Now that would be a brake."

Oh ho ho ... oh yes it would now wouldn't it ... You are not a Switzerland, operating a 'well-regulated militia' with a clear policy of defending only your own undisputed borders ... You are in fact an empire, and must come to terms with the fact ... it will be interesting to see how the great ideals of Liberty and Justice and individual freedom are reconciled with the stark realities of Empire ... there are going to be mistakes, to err is human ... perhaps best to err on the side of Caution, and mind first own's own GD business.

My first realisation that politics involved real human beings came in meeting Viet Nam draft dodgers in the summer of 1966 ... a year or so later, they were joined by men who had 'served' their country and then got the hell out of it ... the second group had more influence, as you can imagine ... a very shaping time ... and that was when the USSR seemed to provide some sort of balance of power ... now there is nothing like that ... we're going to see if it really can be a Democracy, if humans are actually capable of making one.
