Philippine history has a great deal in common with that of Latin America, and the country is in many ways more characteristically Latin than Asian. The Spanish were here for 300 years, and the Americans for some time after; that could hardly help but leave a mark.

Mark Twain wrote a good deal about the American occupation of the Philippines, all of which, like the entire occupation, has been conveniently forgotten. I wonder how many Americans even know that we once had a colony....
