Carl, re: I've never had any doubt that Intel had a backup plan. I'm just not sure that we've seen real leaks that it is viable.

IMO, Armador is a solution leak that is viable.

The context is the i820 and i840 (i.e. ECC) SDRAM disasters. Intel has had nothing but problems with those boards. I think that this will make Intel very hesitant to use a similar part to rescue Willamette from the gelid embrace of Rambus.

I think you should revisit the original roadmap and the reason the MTH was required.

More likely they will cut off i820 production so as to open up RDRAM for Willamette. What would you do? The Register said that the i820 step-3 got cancelled a few weeks ago. That would support the suggestion that Intel is going to shift RDRAM usage over to Willamette. And they only need a few million parts for this year.

That would also suggest a penalty for the W/S's and Desk top's currently offered. Should Dell, etc. convert current products from 820 DRDRAM to 815 with SDRAM? (Willamette at 1gHz+ isn't going to fit the cost structure for many of those machines). I don't see how they can "shift production."

For a new product to ramp into the performance and main stream segments, there must be a corresponding ramp in memory. If it's there, fine. But if there are serious questions, I think the back up solution will have to be robust. I'm sure they're hoping it won't be required, but if it is, they can't afford a weak solution.
But as quoted to the Register, this is all speculation, <g>
