PM is a practical system to obtaining prior consent, so SI is open to all sorts of trouble if it does pursue a disclosure policy akin to Yahoo's (as opposed to AOL).

Excellent point. After all, how hard is it for SI to send someone a PM that says "We have been issued a subpoena to release your personal information. Please contact us at [...] to further discuss this matter." In other words, when is a PM not, to use SI's term, "practical"?
