Rate hikes have begun to show some effects. Wage pressure, however, has not begun to moderate yet.

Wage pressure and a rising unemployment rate will follow at some point. The recent 1/2 point increase will have no effect until next year which is a bit concerning because if the economy is starting to slow there is no telling whether or not these current and / or future increases will do some real damage in 2001. Remember the art of rising rates is just that an art not a science.
