Buck,
Don't be afraid or apologize for talking over some heads. You're a bit over mine, and I'm in the Computer Industry, but I own both EMC and NTAP and am really enjoying these comprehensive posts. Being here to learn, being exposed to the knowledge I'm not completely comfortable with is what makes me grow.

Best Regards,
Bretsky

re. NTAP & EMC

I can hear the NEXT buttons being clicked from here.

Not from here! One of the better discussions to which I've been privy. If that makes me a "gear head" so be it. I second Bretsky's affirmative perspective and would like to see the conversation continue.

Hanging around...

re NAS/SAN :

Its been a while since I was involved in storage technology, so I'll have to shake some cobwebs off before contributing in a meaningful manner...

meantime, it appears to me, that *today*, (NAS/SAN) or (NTAP/EMC) address different market segments with their respective offerrings. Each has their own strength/weakness. Over time, there could well be a convergence, and then "real competition" could come to the fore.

hey, it gives me time to brush the cobwebs off, OK ? :-)

Meantime, thanks to you & DownSouth, for the discussion!

cheers, kumar

yes, the discussion is a bit over everybody's heads...and yes, you two are showing off shamelessly while trying to prove whose is bigger...but no, it's not inappropriate and you shouldn't stop, for several reasons.

first, someone's gotta put that good ole boy in his place for a change.

second, storage is a critical, booming area and NTAP and EMC are two of the most widely held and beloved companies around here, so education is useful and helpful.

third, the two of you actually know what you're talking about and are conducting the discussion civilly, trying to come to valid conclusions and not just score debating points. So keep going as necessary, but just take some time at the end of each post to put in a plain-English "bottom line" for the carpetologists and other non-techies out there...

Surely you realize just how few people actually understand this discussion, even those whose living is in IT, much less investors.

DS and Buck:

FWIW, I'm getting a lot out of your discussions in regards to the NAS/SAN architectures!

Thanks for the excellent discussion, Buck.

I hope you will get some hands on experience with NTAP products. This verbal back and forth is not going to convince you of what NTAP claims and I have seen for myself on many occasions.

Buck - I just went back and read some of your posts on the SAN/NAS topic. I apologise for repeating what you already said. But hey -- you obviously know what you are talking about :)
