The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday, May 20, edition that a 25-year-old man from suburban Montreal was convicted Friday, of bombing BioChem Pharma in a bizarre but inept plot to turn a quick dollar by driving down the company stock price. The Globe's Ingrid Peritz writes that Steven Thresh was found guilty in Quebec Superior Court on stock fraud and explosives charges. He was immediately sentenced to three years in prison. Mr. Thresh's wife, 30-year-old Carole Perron, was acquitted on a stock fraud charge in the 1997 bombing of BioChem Pharma. Ms. Perron, who is eight-months pregnant, cried when she heard her husband's verdict. The verdict ended a trial that showcased an elaborate plan to play on the volatility of the stock market by using violence. During the trial, the prosecution described an elaborate scheme by amateur stock market speculators, stung by losses in the Bre-X Minerals fiasco, to try to recoup their financial losses. The plot burst into public view in November, 1997, with the sensational bombings of two buildings belonging to BioChem.
