I am criticising MSFT on the driver issue, because it hurts sales.

Hurts the sales of who, and to what concern in the long run? <g>

Some of the vendors who manufacture some of the older hardware are either out of business or no longer supporting that hardware. You underestimate the development costs in terms of time. Microsoft or any other software vendor who believe in backward compatibility usually can only support the top X% of older hardware.

You could quibble about X, but I doubt you will quibble about this methodology.

Re: "I am criticising MSFT on the driver issue, because it hurts sales. If Windows 2000 had the same level of hardware support as Windows NT or Windows 98, people would think that NT had improved. Now, people wonder why their stuff doesn't work on Windows 2000, which generates FUD (Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt)."

It seems to me some people need experts to unFUD themselves.<g> I wonder if DELL,CPW,HWP can help them? It still will cost less then overpaying for a SUNW box.

I wonder if SUNW feels the heat?

p.s. I wonder if AOL still thinks MSFT is going to swallow up the internet?

I can't argue with that one SunSpot. I've experienced the driver issue firsthand, and I would have liked to see better driver support as well. I'm sure it came down to a tradeoff of making core functionality/stability available to customers vs continued driver development/support. Many people can use the current improvements with the existing level of driver support, and they are doing so. Hopefully more people will be able to do so soon as more drivers become available.
