Dire Strait: CBN Satellite Images Reveal Threat to Key Oil Passageway

By Chris Mitchell
May 22, 2000

-- The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most strategic bodies of water. The reason is simple: oil. A large percentage of the world's oil is shipped through the Strait of Hormuz, but satellite photos obtained by CBN News reveal a threat to this critical chokepoint.

It's easy to see from a satellite image how vulnerable the Strait of Hormuz is. Only 30 to 50 miles wide, this passageway controls the flow of petroleum from the oil-rich Persian Gulf to the rest of the world. It's one of the world's major chokepoints for the free flow of oil, and since 20 percent of the world's oil flows through this narrow passageway, it's crucial to the world's economy.

But these satellite photos reveal a potential threat to the free flow of oil. The threat is on the island called Abu Musa that contains sophisticated and deadly missile systems.
