Bull and BEA to jointly develop Vertical Business Applications Based on EJB Components
PARIS and SAN JOSE, Calif., May 23 /PRNewswire/ -- BEA Systems, Inc., (Nasdaq: BEAS), The E-Commerce Transactions Company(TM), and Groupe Bull, the global IT company, today announced plans to create joint centres of excellence to deliver Enterprise Java Bean (EJB)-based vertical application components for the financial services and telecommunications markets. Leveraging these new vertical market components, or "adaptable applications," and other elements of the combined Bull and BEA solution -- such as Bull's extensive integration expertise and the comprehensive BEA E-Commerce Transaction Platform(TM) -- customers will be able to shorten from years down to weeks the definition and production of market-specific business solutions. Bull and BEA will work together to develop these vertical components based on their experiences gained from joint deployments of enterprise class e-commerce solutions.

Today's announcement extends the strategic agreement signed between the two companies last December in which Bull became the first European company to license the entire BEA E-Commerce Transaction Platform(TM) -- including BEA Tuxedo(R), the BEA WebLogic(R) Family of Application Servers, the BEA eLink(TM) family of integration products, BEA WebLogic Commerce Server(TM), and BEA WebLogic Personalization Server(TM). Bull was also the first partner world-wide to license the BEA Accelerated Processes(TM) consulting methodology. Bull has developed expertise in using the BEA products and methodology in consulting and systems integration projects with major customers building e-commerce applications, and is combining those strengths with its leadership in the financial services and telecommunication markets. This experience makes Bull uniquely qualified to jointly develop vertically-focused components with BEA.

Bull has more than 300 experts knowledgeable in the full range of BEA technologies, and is building a pan European team of expert consultants able to facilitate the BEA Accelerated Processes methodology. In addition, Bull has created a full range of platform services for the company's Escala(TM) family of highly scaleable, highly available infrastructure platforms specifically focused on Web transaction environments. Bull and BEA will pool their teams of experts that have been working together at Bull's International Competency Centres in Grenoble and Amsterdam since the initial agreement was signed, to develop and support the vertical-market EJB-based application components. These components will help customers better compete in the net-economy by rapidly deploying secure, robust, high throughput web-based business solutions that deliver unique business differentiators. The first fruits of this initiative will be delivered in 3Q2000.
